Why organic?
WHY choose organic food for your family? Organic farming works in harmony with nature, avoiding harmful chemicals to help maintain a healthy environment rich in wildlife and nutrients.
Studies show that, on average, organic food contains more vitamins and minerals than non-organic food because the plants grow in natural, nutrient-rich soil.
Researchers at the University of Washington in the United States found that children eating a diet of organic foods were exposed to far fewer — six to nine times less — toxic pesticides than children eating a conventional diet.
Organic meat and milk have also been shown to have higher levels of essential fatty acids. This is because organic animals eat a natural grass-based diet as opposed to conventionally-farmed animals that eat processed feeds to build weight.
Organic farmers use natural methods to control pests, weeds and diseases. So buying organic is one way to reduce the chances that your food contains pesticides.
Our concern with food, however, is hardly a new thing. In the 5th century BC, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, is credited with saying: ‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’
Organic certification
Granny Smith Natural Food Market is a registered organic enterprise certified by the Biological Farmers of Australia-owned certification agency Australian Certified Organic. This means that Granny Smith’s produce handling and labelling is independently audited so that you can buy with confidence, knowing that the organic foods offered by us comply with national standards for organic farming and food processing. Because of this, we also distinguish through storage and labelling those foods which we sometimes offer which are not certified to be organic.
